Massive showing at King's Baton Relay, Commonwealth Sports commends Ghana.

Ghana proudly hosted the prestigious King's Baton Relay, a cherished tradition of the Commonwealth Games that symbolizes unity, peace, and friendship among nations. The event was attended by distinguished guests, including the Chief of Staff of the Republic of Ghana, the British High Commissioner, the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, the Director General of the National Sports Authority, the Chief Justice of Ghana, representatives from the various National Security Services, sports legends and business men & women.

The King's Baton Relay was part of Ghana's preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, and aimed to promote unity, friendly competition, and environmental sustainability. Ghana's involvement in the relay highlighted the nation's commitment to sports, cultural pride, and environmental awareness, particularly in efforts to combat plastic pollution in marine environments.

After an inspiring start at the presidency, the baton journeyed through the streets of Accra, where the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Christian Rogg, joined the relay team to share in the excitement.
 

The vibrant procession, led by the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Mr. Richard Akpokavie, was a true celebration of unity and friendship, igniting joy and anticipation for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

On day two, the Commonwealth Sports, Ghana team carried the excitement to the Eastern Region, paying courtesy calls to the Palace of the Aburihene, Aburi Senior High School, and Adonten Senior High School, before rounding off the vibrant tour at Dodowa.

The delegation also joined hands at Independence Beach for a massive clean-up exercise, championing the clean water campaign by the Commonwealth Sports Federation.

The excitement peaked on the final day as the baton reachedp the Osu Manhean Basic School, before wrapping  up the memorable campaign with inspiring stops at Accra High School and the Air Force Officers’ Mess at Burma Camp.

Mr. Richard Akpokavie expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Chief of Staff, the Aburihene, and other distinguished leaders for their support and dedication to sports development.

He commended their continuous commitment towards promoting the values of unity, discipline, and excellence that sports represent, noting that such collaboration is important in driving the nation’s sporting ambitions forward.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games is set to take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026, in Glasgow, Scotland, where athletes across the Commonwealth will gather to celebrate excellence, unity, and the enduring spirit of sportsmanship.
