GOC will commence the building of a multipurpose hall at Amasaman in June

ACCRA, GHANA — The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has announced a definitive timeline to revive the stalled Olympafrica project at Amasaman, with the construction of a modern multipurpose sports hall officially scheduled to begin by the end of June this year.

The breakthrough follows intensive high-level engagements aimed at rescuing the project, which had faced prolonged delays with possible encroachment. The standstill had recently drawn serious concern from the international Olympafrica Secretariat, triggering a critical deadline for the local committee.

The resumption of work is not only a sporting necessity but a financial imperative. Following direct talks with the Executive Director of Olympafrica, the GOC was faced with a strict ultimatum to resume physical construction by the June deadline or refund the $100,000 disbursement funding that was granted to Ghana back in 2022.

To safeguard these development funds and ensure the project takes off smoothly, the GOC leadership under President Richard Akpokavie has officially allocated an additional $100,000 in its current budget to commence the first phase of the project estimated at $740.000. This capital injection is specifically earmarked to finance the immediate construction phase of the multipurpose hall, ensuring that the facility breaks ground without further financial hitches.

In a major step forward, the dedicated project committee established by the GOC Board has officially presented the architectural drawings and structural designs for the multipurpose hall and following a comprehensive review of the facility's specifications, the GOC Board has fully approved the designs, clearing the technical decks for physical work to begin. The committee has also actively engaged all vital stakeholders, including the Ga North Municipal Assembly, to secure the necessary local regulatory support and site clearances required to ensure that heavy machinery begins work on schedule.

In a strategic bid to reinforce the project's financial and logistical backbone, the GOC and the Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) Ghana have set plans to re-engage the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Honorable Kofi Adams, in a high-level discussion regarding the government's standing promise to support the development of the Amasaman sports infrastructure. This upcoming engagement aims to align state resources with international funding to ensure the project benefits from the public-private collaboration necessary for a sustainable, top-tier facility.

The project is set to receive a major international boost in the coming weeks. The Executive Director of the Olympafrica Secretariat is scheduled to fly into Ghana this June. The high-profile visit will feature a direct site inspection and further technical discussions with the GOC leadership to map out a seamless, accelerated roadmap toward the ultimate completion of the entire sports complex.

When completed, the Amasaman Olympafrica facility is expected to serve as a vital hub for grassroots talent identification, providing a world-class training ground for youth and non-football sporting disciplines in the enclave and the nation at large.

The GOC calls on corporate Ghana to help put up this sports infrastructure for development and talent hunt.
