GOC/CGA holds successful congress, calls on government to deliberately invest in other disciplines especially the upcoming commonwealth games
ACCRA, GHANA — The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) Ghana have successfully held their Annual General Congress at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Accra marking a critical turning point for the nation’s sports governance.
The event brought together heads of various sports federations, athletes' representatives, and key stakeholders to deliberate on the future of sports in Ghana.
While the atmosphere was celebratory regarding recent international outings and achievements in the year under review, the underlying theme of the congress was a stern call to action for federations to aggressively implement the newly adopted GOC strategic plan for sustainable sports success or risk falling behind.
Mr Richard Akpokavie Esq., President of the GOC/CGA, who charged congress to embrace various structural reforms, praised the resilience of Ghanaian athletes but emphasized that raw talent alone is no longer enough to compete on the global stage.
Mr. Akpokavie called on congress to focus heavily on structural modernization, sustainable funding models, and grassroots talent identification.
"We cannot operate in a reactive cycle where we only prepare when a major tournament is six months away," President Richard Akpokavie stated during his keynote address.
"This strategic plan is a blueprint for institutional excellence. It is now up to the individual federations to breathe life into it. The GOC will provide the support, but the execution lies on your shoulders," he added.
To ensure administrative discipline and streamlined communication within the sports ecosystem, President Richard Akpokavie firmly reminded all member federations of the established protocol regarding state funding and logistics.
He explicitly called on all federations to channel their formal requests for government financial support, infrastructure usage, and tournament sponsorship directly through the National Sports Authority (NSA), which remains the statutory regulatory agency for sports in Ghana.
The GOC President emphasized that adhering to this proper line of communication is vital to eliminating institutional friction, ensuring accountability, and maintaining a unified front when appealing to the sector ministry.
Delivering a strong solidarity message to the congress, the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, urged all sports federations to strictly ensure administrative and operational compliance with the Sports Legislative Instrument (LI).
Mr. Ampofo Ankrah cleared up any misconceptions regarding the authority’s regulatory oversight, reassuring the delegates that the NSA does not view itself as a competitor to the individual federations, but rather as an essential collaborator. He emphasized that the authority's primary mandate is to support, protect, and partner with all sporting disciplines to collectively drive sustainable sports development and governance across the country.
The Director-General mentioned that the NSA is worried about the current leadership and governance crisis within the swimming, table tennis and boxing federations and thus promised to continue with the stakeholder engagement in finding an amicable solution that will grant the peaceful environment for athletes to compete.
In a resolute and unified voice, the congress also directed a passionate appeal to the government to intentionally diversify its sports infrastructure and budgetary investments. Delegates strongly argued that the state's historical, heavy focus on football must shift toward an equitable distribution of resources that prioritizes the "lesser-funded" or non-football sporting disciplines.
Stakeholders noted that these federations consistently punch above their weight on the international circuit, delivering massive returns on minimal investments. Congress stressed that with the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, fast approaching, a deliberate and immediate capital injection into these disciplines is the nation's surest path to securing continental dominance, podium finishes, and ultimate national glory.
A major highlight of the day’s proceedings was the presentation of the GOC’s financial health. In a strong demonstration of unity and confidence in the current leadership's transparency, the congress unanimously expressed its satisfaction with the statement of accounts presented for the year under review.
Following a constructive review of the financial reports, the delegates formally and unanimously approved the budget for the upcoming financial year. This smooth passage clears the legislative decks for the GOC to aggressively deploy resources toward its new strategic initiatives and athlete preparation without administrative delays.
Beyond the policy directives, the mood among attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with delegates openly expressing their satisfaction with the overall organization of the event. Many seasoned federation heads and stakeholders highly praised the current GOC leadership, describing the event as the most peaceful, transparent, and successful congress organized in over a decade. The leadership was commended for fostering an inclusive environment that encouraged open dialogue, unity, and a shared vision for the future of Ghanaian sports.
