Ghana Olympic Committee adjust Olympic Day with online initiatives

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) moved this year’s Olympic Day initiatives online and on television due to the Covid-19.

The Olympic Day, on June 23, was celebrated simply but effectively by the Communications Department of the GOC.

As many plans on the season changed, especially the postponed Games in Tokyo, a lot of things had to be revised with new virtual activities and competitions.

These include webinars, zoom seminars and an art competition for kids between the ages of 5 to 15 years.

"Because of  the COVID-19 pandemic, the GOC has decided to host a virtual television programme on the biggest sports networks, motably, GTV Sports Plus and Metro TV as well as radio stations all aimed at getting the kids, youth and elderly involved to stay active, strong and healthy," said deputy communications director Sammy Heywood Okine.

"We are organizing this year’s celebrations under the theme of Olympism 'Move, Learn, Discover' to be led by federation heads and coaches in exciting challenges such as a individual skip- run-walk-jog, aerobics workouts, an art contest for children,

He said any sports lover can log on to their social media platforms for more information on Olympic Day 2020 activities.

This year, the tag for the fight against COVID-19 is; Stay Safe-Keep Fit-Love Life, and the Women’s Commission of the GOC are in the forefront of the crusade.

GOC President, Ben Nunoo Mensah said Ghanaians must be very vigilant and careful, and apply intelligence in practicing personal hygiene in curbing the spread of the coronavirus.

He encouraged children to design either the emblem of the GOC, Olympic rings, t-shirts, flames or medals for the art competition to commemorate the 2020 Olympic Day celebrations in Ghana,

Madam Elizabeth King, Chairperson of the GOC Women’s Commission who is very much concerned about the safety and health of Ghanaians advised that people should eat well, exercise regularly and observe the protocols.

“Please Stay Positive” she encouraged all kids and women in sports.

African Weightlifting Bronze medalist, Winnefred Ntumy and amateur boxer Faruiza Osman shared their experience as young national athletes and appealed to the government to employ national athletes as they also try to find jobs

Mr. Gabby Ammah, Director of Urban Sports Champions (USC) who is a supporter of the Olympic Movement said education on the benefits of sports should reach the kids and the youth.

He hinted that sports can change the lives of the youth, but they must be disciplined to achieve their goals.

Olympic Day was first celebrated in 1948, with National Olympic Committees now holding sports, cultural and educational activities to mark the occasion,
