Azumah Nelson Rallies Team Ghana for Commonwealth Games Success at Media Lauch
Ghanaian boxing legend and former world champion Azumah Nelson has urged Team Ghana athletes to remain focused, disciplined and patriotic as they prepare to represent the nation at the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Speaking at the official media launch of Ghana's participation in the Games, Azumah Nelson encouraged the athletes to seize the opportunity to make history and bring glory to the country.
The boxing icon, affectionately known as "The Professor," reminded the athletes that representing Ghana on the international stage comes with great responsibility and honour.
"You are not going there just for yourselves but for the entire nation. Millions of Ghanaians will be behind you, supporting and praying for your success. Stay disciplined, remain focused on your goals and give your very best whenever you compete," Nelson advised.
He noted that success at major multi-sport events is achieved through sacrifice, hard work and determination, urging the athletes to approach their preparations with seriousness and commitment.
Azumah Nelson also called on the athletes to compete with confidence and belief in their abilities, stressing that Ghana has a proud sporting tradition and the talent to excel against the best competitors in the Commonwealth.
The launch event brought together officials of the Commonwealth Games Association of Ghana , representatives of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, corporate partners, members of the media and athletes who will be flying Ghana's flag in Glasgow.
Team Ghana is expected to compete in nine sporting disciplines with a contingent of about 40 athletes at the Games. The launch also unveiled the team's preparations, branding and campaign activities ahead of the competition.
Nelson expressed confidence in the team's prospects and called on all Ghanaians to unite behind the athletes.
"When you wear the national colours, remember that if i was able to do it, then you can also achieve. Make Ghana proud and enjoy the experience, but most importantly, compete to win," he stated.
The media launch forms part of activities by the Commonwealth Games Association of Ghana to build nationwide support and excitement as Team Ghana counts down to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. The campaign is expected to engage fans, corporate institutions and stakeholders in a collective effort to support Ghana's quest for success on the international stage
