Our level of performance will need to rise- Sellas Tetteh

Sellas TettehGhana coach Sellas Tetteh is not getting carried away with his side’s qualification to the 16th stage at the Fifa U-20 World Cup despite posting a 1:0 victory over Panama at the North Harbour StadiumAuckland, New Zealand on Friday morning.

After surviving a late fight back to beat Argentina 3:2 in their last game, the Black Satellites scored through substitute striker Emmanuel Boateng in the 82nd minute to see off Panama.

But the Satellites conceded a late penalty in the 89th minute although replays showed Patrick Asamah’s tackle on the Panamanian player happened outside the 18 yard area.

In a post-match interview Sellas, who led Ghana to the 2009 Fifa U-20 World Cup, was adamant his needs to improve their level of performance going into the knock outs.

“It’s going to be very tough now and our level of performance will need to rise. We have to try to work on our weaknesses,” he said.

He added, “our opponents surprised me today. I was in shock simply because at the World Cup you see such different standards of performance, and today Panama played very well. It was a hard-fought game and the slightly better side won in the end. Now we have to prepare for the Round of 16.”

Ghana’s opponent for the 16th stage will be known after the last round of matches in the other groups are completed.
