Olympic qualifiers:Queens in cruise control, Meteors crash out

QueensGhana’s Olympic teams had mixed results in their respective qualifiers with the Black Queens through to the final stage of qualification while the Black Meteors were sent crushing out of the competition.

A dominant national women’s team, the Black Queens, advanced to the last round of qualifiers to the Olympic football tournament after thrashing Egypt 3:0 at the Accra Sports stadium on Sunday.

Having secured a morale boosting 1:1 drawn game in the first leg in Cairo, the Queens opened the scores through striker Portia Boakye in the 53rd minute before Jane Ayieyam and Elizabeth Addo completed the rout.

Yusif Basigi’s side are now through to the final stage of the Rio 2016 qualifiers where they will face either Guinea or Cameroon.

But there was heartache for the men’s Olympic team who were sent crushing out of the qualifiers after losing 5:4 on penalty shoot out to Congo-Brazzaville following 1:0 score line in regulation time (1:1 on aggregate).

Sylvere Ganvoula scored the decisive goal to cancel out Enoch Ebo Andoh's goal for Ghana in the first leg played at the Accra Stadium last weekend.

This is the third consecutive time that the men’s team, who won a bronze medal in the 1992 Olympics, have failed to qualify to the Olympic football tournament.

But the Black Queens could make history by qualifying for the first time for the women’s football tournament with victory in their last game.
