Richard Akpokavie Assumes Office as President of Ghana Olympic Committee, Ushering in a New Era for Ghana’s Olympic Movement
Accra, Ghana – May 7 , 2025 – The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has officially entered a new chapter as Mr. Richard Akpokavie formally assumed office as its President following a handover ceremony at the GOC headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, 6 May 2025.
The transition marks the culmination of Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah’s eight-year tenure, with Akpokavie taking the helm after securing a decisive victory at the recent GOC Congress. The ceremony saw the symbolic transfer of leadership, including official documents, office keys, and remaining kits from Ghana’s participation in the Tokyo 2021 Olympics and Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
In a parallel handover, outgoing GOC Treasurer Mr. Frederick Acheampong transferred financial records to his successor, Mr. Evans Yeboah, ensuring continuity in the Committee’s fiscal management.
A Call for Unity and Progress
In his inaugural address, President Akpokavie, who had previously contested the presidency four years ago, emphasized the importance of collaboration among board members, sports federations, and the media to elevate the GOC’s role in advancing Ghanaian sports.
“This is a new chapter for Ghana’s Olympic movement,” Akpokavie declared. “Together, we can transform the GOC into a catalyst for excellence and innovation in sports development.”
Outgoing President Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah extended his best wishes to his successor, urging him to build on the GOC’s achievements and prioritize the completion of key initiatives, such as the OlympAfrica Juvenile Sports Excellence Centre in Amasaman.
New Leadership, Shared Vision
The newly appointed Secretary-General, Mr. Mohammed Muniru, praised Nunoo Mensah’s contributions and assured him that his expertise would remain valued. “Your legacy of leadership will continue to inspire us, and your counsel will always be welcome,” Muniru stated.
