Black Meteors advance to 2nd round of Olympic qualifiers

Black MeteorsThe national Olympic team, the Black Meteors, are through to the second round of qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games after thrashing Liberia 5:1 in their return leg game at the Tamale Sports stadium.

The Meteors thus beat their West African rivals 7:1 on aggregate, having won the first leg 2:0 at the same venue a fortnight ago.

The Liberians opted to play the return leg in Ghana due to the outbreak of the Ebola virus in their country.

The Liberian Olympic team were blown away by a dominant Meteors team this time around, with Kotoko striker Dauda Mohammed scoring a brace, while Baba Mensah, Sadiq Alhassan and Tamimu Muntari completed the rout.

The Meteors will face Congo in the second round of qualification, with the winner of the tie meeting Nigeria in the final qualifier for the 2015CAF U-23 Championship in Senegal in December.

The three top teams from the eight nation tournament will qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
