Black Meteors chase Olympic qualification

ablade kumahThe Black Meteors of Ghana will be seeking to re-join the Olympic elites for the first time in over a decade when they take on Liberia in a Rio 2016 Olympic qualifier at the Tamale Sports stadium on Saturday.

The national U-23s last qualified for the Olympic football tournament of the Athens Olympics in 2004 but have since failed to qualify for tournament in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

The Meteors will be buoyed by the fact that they only recently qualified for the 2015 All Africa Games with a 2:1 aggregate score over Mozambique at the same venue.

The head coach of the team Malik Jabir is expected to add a few foreign based players to his squad for the first leg encounter at home.

Meanwhile, Ghana could be in line to host the return leg of the qualifier following a request by the Liberians to play the game in the country due to the outbreak of the Ebola virus in their country.

Congo and Nigeria await the Meteors in the second and third rounds for a place in the 8-national novelty 2015 CAF U-23 Championship in Senegal in December. The three top teams from the tournament will qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Ghana won a historic first bronze medal in football at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
