Today (July 24) is Sports Day in Japan

Today (July 24) is Sports Day in Japan, a special national holiday set for Tokyo 2020's opening day. The Opening Ceremony supposed to be held in Tokyo right now, but the Olympic Stadium is all locked up (and guarded), quiet, and dark. Tokyo has been overcast today, but no rain and not terribly hot either. Would've been a great day for the OC.

At 8 pm tonight, over 100 locations all over Japan launched fireworks for a few minutes to mark this occasion. However, to avoid gathering crowds, they didn't announce where the fireworks will be. In Tokyo, the fireworks were in Akishima. Missed it.

Also last night from 8 pm for "1 Year to Go," a few of the venues were lit up in Olympic colors. Top left in the photo, the Aquatics Center and Ariake Arena below, and Tokyo Skytree (non-venue). They were going to do this illumination every evening from July 10 to the end of Tokyo 2020. Don't lose hope...
