“I urged the TPC to do their best, give the children a good show for them to join Taekwondo. If there is any difficulty, let us know through the GTF.” He adde

The TPC (Sanghun Jeong, Yongbin Kim, Hanna Jeong, & Sohyun Lee, Interpreter) who were in the company of the President of GTF, Frederick Lartey Otu, Secretary-General, Adnan Odartey Lamptey, Technical Director, Stephen Amegashie Jnr and the PRO, Davis Nii Attuquaye Clottey, also visited the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana (NPC-Ghana) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to make known the Federation’s target they seek to achieve with the Peace Corps.

The visit to the GOC

The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Ben Nunoo Mensah together with the Deputy Secretary-General, Rev Richmond Quarcoo and Communications Director Cobby Jones warmly received the team and had a brief interaction.

Ben Nunoo Mensah shared his childhood moments in Taekwondo and wished the team well.

“Welcome and thank you (TPC) for the Love you have for Ghana. You wouldn’t have come if you don’t Love Ghana. We used to practice Taekwondo those days in schools but it is no more. I am therefore happy the GTF is bringing up something like this. I did Taekwondo from age 7-21 and there are so many benefits to it and especially Children. Unfortunately, many are not aware of it so I am glad this exercise will teach them.”

The Weightlifting Federation President also commended the Ambassador of the Korea Republic for his contribution and support to not only Taekwondo but other sports.

“I’m sure you’ll be itching to come back to Ghana because of the love and hospitality you’ll receive. The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea has been so supportive, not only to Taekwondo but to other sports and I must commend him for that. Wishing you a pleasant stay in Ghana. Taekwondo is dear to the Ghana Olympic Committee and so we’ll support you in any way.”

NPC-Ghana visit was brief and exciting

It was time to say Hi to the President of the National Paralympic Committee- Ghana in his office as one of the targets of the School to School Taekwondo is to talk more about Para-Taekwondo with the National Coach scheduled to talk to the School Children.

Enthusiastic Samson Deen was hopeful that the over three weeks stay of the TPC will yield good results.

“I will focus on Paralympic because that is my part. I want your president to also during this time use you to drive an agenda for the Paralympic because, for us, we give the ability to those who think they are not capable. So, we are grateful that you were selected and you are glad to work with the GTF and it will affect us.”

“We are hopeful that your presence in Ghana we yield us more results in the future, will see Ghana winning medals. You are welcome and we will give you all the support for you to achieve the target for which you are here. By the next 2 to 3 years, Ghana Taekwondo will be one of the best in Africa. So, we wish all the best and you are welcome once again.” He concluded.

It was rather unfortunate that the Team couldn’t meet the Minister of Youth and Sports, Kwame Asiamah as he was in another crucial meeting but enjoyed the company of the Chief Director, Mr Frank Quist who shared his Taekwondo background.

Mr Quist who also shared memories about his visits to Korea praised the initiative.

“It is a very good initiative you have taken. When we were in school, we did Taekwondo and we used to do aerobics. Taekwondo is very good in self-defence and with this, the school children will learn a lot. I find this as a good opportunity for the schools to expand their extra school curriculum.”

“We are hosting 2023 African Games and we would want them to help motivate the national teams so that Taekwondo will win us medals. We have a lot of plans for all the sports, training and other and Taekwondo is no exception We welcome you to Ghana and hope you enjoy your stay.” He added.

It was a fruitful day, visiting these prominent and key stakeholders in the development and promotion of Taekwondo.

The School to School Taekwondo Campaign (#S2STkdCamp20) is expected to begin on Wednesday, January 15 through to Wednesday, February 7, 2020 in International Schools within the Greater Accra and Central regions.
