Kaya to open Ghana's campaign at Rio

KayaKaya Adwoa Forson, 14, will become the first Ghanaian swimmer to compete at the Olympics when she takes to water at the Olympic Aquatics stadium in Rio on Monday, 8thAugust.

She will also be the first Ghanaian athlete among the nation’s 16-member contingent to compete at the Games.

Drawn in lane 1 of Heat 1  of the women’s 200m freestyle, she will be up against India’s Shivani Kataria and Fiji’s Matelita Buadromo.

Born in Canada, she was handed a universality place at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games by World Swimming governing body, FINA, after competing at the FINA World Championships in Karzan, Russian in 2015.

Born 2002, she competed in the women’s 200m freestyle heats during the FINA Swimming World Championships on 4 August 2015, a key requirement for qualification to the Olympics.

Kaya was named as the youngest athlete at the championships. She recently competed in the FINA’s 12th Luxembourg International Swimming Open in preparation for the Rio Olympics.
