Abdul Omar earns Quota Place for Rio 2016

Abdul Wahid Omar certpsRio 2016 scholarship holder Abdul Wahid Omar has earned a quota place for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after placing third in the bantamweight division (56kg) at the recent African Olympic Qualifiers in Cameroon.

In letter dated 11th April, 2016 and signed by Karim Bouzidi, AIBA Executive Director informed the Ghana Olympic Committee that: “According to the Olympic Games qualification guidelines, the below boxer from your country has earned a quota place for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.”

Omar, who won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, missed out on an automatic place in Rio 2016 after losing his box-off bout against Mohammed Hamout of Morocco at the African Olympic qualifiers last month.

This brings to five the number of athletes who have qualified for the Olympic Games. The list has 800m runner Alex Amankwah, 100m sprinters Sean Safo-Antwi, 100m Flings Owusu-Agyapong and javelin thrower John Ampomah.

It will be recalled that Abdul Wahid Omar was one of 12 Ghanaian sportsmen/women who were awarded Rio 2016 Scholarships by the Ghana Olympic Committee in March, 2015 to prepare towards the Olympic Games.

With less than four months to the Games, Ghanaian sportsmen/women continue their quest to qualify for the Games in their various disciplines.
