Ghana records four wins and one loss at Rio 2016 qualifiers

GhanaGhana has recorded four wins and one loss at the ongoing African Continental Olympic boxing qualification event at the Yaoundé Multipurpose Sports Complex in Yaoundé, Cameroun.

David Bawa Akankolim kicked off the Black Bombers campaign on a bright note when he recorded a technical knockout over Uganda’s Willy Kyakonye in round one of the men’s heavyweight 91kg on the opening day.

However, light welterweight Jessie Lartey suffered a technical knockout in the third round of his bout against Namibia’s Jonas Junius.

Mohammed Azumah edged Namibia’s Mikasiu Able Shituleipo by a split decision in the welterweight 69kg division. 

In the men’s +91kg division, Ghana’s Emmanuel Sandyman won by a unanimous decision over Cameroon’s Arsene Fokou Fosso.

2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, Abdul Wahid Omar beat home fighter Narcisse Mevoah Melono in the bantamweight 56Kg category to advance to the quarter finals.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s only female boxer at the Olympic qualifier, Ramatu Quaye is set to be in action later on Sunday.

Ghana is being represented by nine boxers at the Olympic qualifier. Only the top two finalists in each division will automatically qualify for Rio 2016.
