Abrefa & Lartey exit 2016 ITTF-Africa Olympic Qualifier

Derek AbrefaGhana’s Derek Abrefa and Felix Lartey exited the Men’s Singles event at the 2016 ITTF-Africa Olympic Qualification Tournament after losing their respective Round of 16 matches held in Khartoum, Sudan on Wednesday, 17th February.

No. 5 seed, Abrefa was knocked out by Algeria’s Aissa Belkadi who won with a comfortable score of 2-11, 5-11,9-11, 8-11.

No. 6 seed Felix Lartey put out a brave performance, winning the first set but ultimately lost to Congo Brazzaville’s Suraju Saka 11-8,13-15,9-11,7-11,10-12 in the other round of 16 tie involving a Ghanaian.

How they qualified to Round of 16

The top two Ghanaian players experienced contrasting fortunes on the opening day of the Men’s Singles event at the 2016 ITTF-Africa Olympic Games Qualification tournament on Tuesday 16th February.

Second Place for Derek Abrefa
Top 5 seed Derek Abrefa started his campaign by beating Sudan’s Farah Abdelrahman (11-4, 11-5, 15-13) and Libya’s Adir Abushuwashi (11-3, 10-12, 12-10, 11-7), before experiencing defeat at the hands of Tunisia’s Mounaim Tirselt (11-5, 7-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-7).

Third Place for Felix Lartey
Second place was the lot of Derek Abrefa, for Ghanaian compatriot, Felix Lartey, the outcome was even less encouraging. The no. 6 seed had to settle for third place in the group.

After accounting for Togo’s Soudes Alassani (11-7, 11-7, 11-8), he was beaten by Madagascar’s Jonathan Ntival (11-7, 11-13, 15-13, 11-7) and by Tunisia’s Kerem Ben Yahia (11-4, 11-7, 11-8).

Lartey clinched one of the top four places in his group and thus qualified to the round of 16.

Qualification Round

The competition had six groups in the first stage of proceedings with players finishing in first and second positions advancing to the main draw.

In order to complete 16 names in the opening round, four further places, selected from those who had finished in third position in the group gained a main draw place.
