Rio 2016: Ofori Asare gets AIBA Coaching Appointment

Coach-AsareFormer national Amateur coach Ofori Asare has been handed an AIBA Coaching instructor role ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

Ofori Asare is currently in Ordu, Turkey for an AIBA 1-Star Coaching Course whicn runs from December 20th to 26th, to conduct the first of six engagements in the lead up to the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

Mr. Asare and another AIBA course instructor will be taking 50 participants through the rudiments of the pugilist profession during the period.

According to AIBA, the course is being organised because “a lot of National Federations do not have 3-Star Level coaches or uncertified 1-/2- Star level coaches who need to get 3-Star Level Certification to be able to accompany their coaches to Olympic qualifiers and the Olympic Games.”

The amateur boxing world governing body has therefore created a coaching calendar with emphasis on 2- and 3-Star Level courses.

Accordingly, there will be a very intensive period from January to May 2016 where AIBA plans to organise 2-Star coach courses in all of the Confederations regions in January and February, and 3-Star coach courses during the Olympic Qualifiers and the Women’s World Championships from March to May.

In total, AIBA will be organising six 2-Star courses and seven 3-Star courses during that period.

After a distinguished career as an amateur boxer and professional boxer, Ofori Asare joined the national amateur team, the Black Bombers in 1996 as an assistant coach and later rose to become the head coach.

He supervised the preparation and participation of the national team at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and a lot of African Championships during his reign.

He is considered as one of the most experienced boxing trainers in the country. He is the only Ghanaian boxing coach who holds a 3-Star license from AIBA.
