Weightlifters participate in IWF World Championships

Christian AmoahGhanaian weightlifting duo of Christian Amoah and Christopher Forrester Osei kicked off Team Weightlifting’s quest to qualify for Rio 2016 by participating in the 2015 World Weightlifting Championships which was recently held in Houston, United States from November 19 to 28, 2015.

Amoah placed 29th in the men’s 85 kg while Christopher Forrester Osei placed 34th in the +95 kg at the event which also served as the first stage of the Qualification Process for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Amoah, who was a 2014 African Youth Games silver medalist, lifted 125 kilograms in the snatch before lifting 154kilograms in the clean and jerk to record an overall lift of 279kilograms.

The 85kg division was won by Russia’s Artem Okulov with a total lift of 391 kilograms, followed in second place by Ireland’s Kianoush with 387 kilograms and Russia’s Apti Aukhadov with 380 kilograms.

Meanwhile, Amoah’s compatriot Christopher Forrester Osei lifted 132 kilograms in the snatch and 170 kilograms in the clean and jerk to claim an overall score of 302kg.

The 26 year old UK based athlete, who last competed for Ghana at the 2015 All Africa Games, placed 34th in the men’s 94kg division.

The men’s +94kg was won by Belarus’s Vadzim Straltsou who won with a total lift of 405kg while the Khazantan’s pair of Almas Uteshov and  Zhassulan Kydyrbayev took second and third place with 402kg and 399kg respectively.
