Black Bombers off to 8-nation tourney in Benin


Ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic qualifiers next year, a 27-member national boxing team has arrived in Cotonou, Benin to take part in an eight-day invitational tournament.

The tournament involves eight nations including Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroun, Algeria, Morocco and the host nation.

The trip which is being sponsored by members of the Ghana Boxing Federation is expected to prepare the team for the impending Rio qualifiers in March next year.

The Black Bombers team is made up of 12 male boxers, four female boxers, two referee/judges, three coaches and a technical director.

The male team includes the captain of the Black Bombers Sulemanu Tetteh (49kg), Akimos Anang Ampiah (52kg), Jerry Lartey (56kg),  Jesse Lartey (60kg), Azumah Mohammed (64kg), Musa Rahman Lawson (69kg) and Emmanuel Kato (76kg).

The rest are Anani Kutsoke (81kg), David Bawa Akankolim (91kg), Benjamin Offei Dodoo (91kg) and Abubakari Quartey (69kg).

The female boxers include Leticia Amanua Ankrah (48kg), Ramatu Quaye (52kg), Abigail Quartey (57kg) and Emelia Appiah (60kg).

According to the President of the GBF, Gideon Quartey, the boxers who excel at the tournament will embark on a training tour of France to be sponsored by the French boxing federation. The tour is geared towards preparing boxers to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics.
