Team Ghana Places 19th At 2018 Africa Youth Games In Algeria

Team Ghana finished 19th at the just-ended 2018 Africa Youth Games (AYG) in Algiers, Algeria. Thirty-seven countries participated in the multi-sports event.

The team from Ghana won six medals at the Games.

Team Ghana arrived on Sunday July 29, 2018 after winning three silver medals and three bronze medals in four sporting disciplines; athletics, hockey, swimming and beach volleyball.

Leader of the delegation, Albert K. Frimpong, said Ghana competed in four disciplines because the games served as a qualification platform for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October.

Swimmer Abeiku Jackson who was captain of Team Ghana won four medals, comprising three silver medals and a bronze medal, while Ghana’s fifth medal was won by the male beach volleyball team pair of Eric Tsatsu and Kevin Carboo, who won silver.

Jackson, who was the star for Team Ghana, also sealed qualification to the Youth Olympic Games, to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The male beach volleyball team also qualified for the event.

In athletics, Ghana was represented by Yaro Stephen, Diafo Solomon, Gyamfi Regina, McCarthy Dominic, Opoku Dorcas, and Tuffour Paul Kofi as coach. 400m runner, Solomon Diaffo won Ghana’s last bronze medal in the finals of his event.

Quayson Racheal, Addae Gifty, Gbati Asana, Nuatro Esther, Akoto Charity, Otto Eleanor, Okine Rafiyatu, Donkor Rebecca and Copson Hagiet represented Ghana as hockey players and were managed by Yarboi Irene and Abass Ramatu.

Swimming was also made up of Jackson Abeiku (Team Captain), Poku-Dwumoh Papa Yaw, Sowah Prince Abdullah and Kaya Forson, with Jackson Kodwo Abbiw as coach.

Other officials who accompanied Team Ghana were Albert K. Frimpong (chef du mission), with George Owusu Ansah (administrator) and Isaac Kwaku Ahorlu Wallace (media attaché).
