First Fencing Hungarian Ambassador Cup held in Accra

The Ghana Fencing Association in collaboration with the Hungarian Ambassador have successfully organized the first fencing

inter-schools competition dubbed, ‘First Fencing Hungarian Ambassador Cup’ at Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, 22nd June 2017.

This competition is to encourage fencing in various schools in the (10) region across Ghana and also give an opportunity to the winner to have a training camp in Hungary next month. Seven (7) teams from five(5) Regions were able to participate in the competition.

The School are Sogakope Senior High School and Three town Senior High School all from Volta Region.

The rest are Azoka Amass and Bawku Technical school from the Upper East Region, Accra Academy and Ningo Senior High School from the Greater Accra and Kumasi Wesley Girls.

The schools were able to produce 37 fencer include boys and girls.

FENCING6The presidents of Ghana Fencing Association Mr. Mohammed Mahadi who doubles as vice president of African Fencing Confederation describes the tournament as an exciting one.

He also congratulated the sponsors and honoured them with Certificate of Appreciation to the FIE President Mr. Alisher Usmanov for supporting the training of this sports masters through the International Charity Fund for the future of Fencing at the National Fencing Academy in Accra , and Mr. Laroslav Goncharov Attache, Russian Embassy.

“What I’m witnessing today is beyond my imaginaton and I wasn’t expecting such a tremendous performance like this. In the beginning, I was thinking we are going to have a lot of encounters but the Fencers came up with standard performances so I’m very happy for the entire federation members.

The Hungarian ambassador to Ghana H.E Andras Szabo also graced the occasion.

“I think the future of Ghana Fencing is bright and we are here to promote Ghana Fencing. All this idea came from Ghana fencing Association and they invited Hungary as a mother nation of Fencing. We all know football is the main sports in Ghana but I think we need to encourage more sporting disciplines so that is why we are pushing hard. Apart from Fencing, Swimming and Boxing are also in the pipe line, According to Mr Andras Szabo.

At the end of the tournament Three Town Senior High School crowned victorious from the men category by beating Azoka Amass 15-13 and from the women category Sogakope Senior high school also thrashed Ningo Senior High School by 12-8.
