National 800m indoor record holder Alex Amankwah became the first Ghanaian to qualify for Rio 2016 Olympic Games in December, 2015 following a revision of the Rio qualification standards by athletics world governing body, the IAAF.

The Alabama University student ran a personal best 1.45.91s on 2nd May 2015 which enabled him to qualify by 9/100ths of a second. He last competed for Ghana at the 2015 All African Games in Congo-Brazzaville.

Born in Ghana on 2nd March, 1992, Alex Amankwah emigrated to the USA with his parents Erick Amankwah and Dorothy Nyarko in later years.
