Christian Amoah for Rio 2016

Christian AmoahChristian Amoah has been named as Ghana’s lone weightlifter to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games by the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF).

Team Weightlifting secured a quota place for the Olympic Games after being ranked 5th out of 10 countries in the men’s team classification at the 2016 African Championships in Yaoundé, Cameroon.


A press statement signed by the Deputy General Secretary of GWF, Kenneth Odeng Adade said his outfit after rigorous training sessions and consultations settled on Master Amoah as the country’s representative for the Games.

Amoah, who shot into national prominence after winning gold at the 2014 African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana, has represented Ghana in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland and the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Championship in USA.

He finished 6th in the 85kg category at the 2015 All African Games.

The statement charged the youngster to "do his best best to raise the flag of Ghana high at the Olympic Games".
