Sal 2019: Meet Kretcheu – Mascot of 1st Africa Beach Games In Cape Verde

The mascot of the Sal 2019 African Beach Games, known as Kretxeu, will also have fun at the Carnival of the São Vicente, Sal and Santo Antão islands, from February 26 to March 5.

Shrovetide celebrations program will be intense for the mascot, which represents the largest event ever hosted by Cape Verde, that will be held from June 14 to 26, at Santa Maria beach on Sal island.

The activities will start in São Vicente on February 26 with its participation in the Carnival rehearsal of the Flores de Mindelo Group, followed by the rehearsal with Etrelas do Mar, Cruzeiros do Norte, Monte Sossego Group and the School of Samba Tropical.

The day the parades will begin on Praça Nova, on Friday, March 1, Kretxeu will march with schools. It will be no different the next day, during which the mascot will have many surprises to unveil at the professors’ parade.

Kretxeu will also hit the streets with the Mandingas group, on March 3, and will parade on the evening of March 4 with the School of Samba Tropical in the Rua de Lisboa.

On Shrovetide, March 5, the mascot will dance samba at the sound of drum rolls with its own choreography inspired by Synchronization, Art, Body and Joy of the 11 sports that will be represented at the African Beach Games.

On Sal island, Kretxeu will also be present simultaneously during the Friday, Sunday and Tuesday celebrations. On Santo Antão, the mascot will participate in the Olympic Values Educational Program in a school of Ponta do Sol and will parade during the Carnival celebrations on the island

The Carnival being one of the greatest modes of expression of the national culture, the Organizing Committee of the African Games of Beach (OCAGC), headed by its President Filomena Fortes, decided that this would be a great time to promote this event through its mascot.

Kretxeu is one of the symbols of the competition having contributed most to raise awareness about sustainability and ocean protection, one of the most important missions of the African Beach Games.

The first edition of this event, staged by Cape Verde, will count on nearly 1000 athletes from 54 African countries in 11 sports.

More than a mere celebration of sport, the African Beach Games will have a strong cultural component with music, food, dance and exposure of national and African products, as well as a space for the realization of meetings between national and international investors.
