Ghana would join 70 other Commonwealth nations for the ninth edition of the Commonwealth Sports Minsters meeting on April 2 and 3, 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia.

The meeting is likely to be attended by the Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah and Ghana’s High Commissioner to Australia, Edwin Nii Adjei.

The meeting is held every two years alongside the Commonwealth Games or Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. This year’s edition would be held under the theme; ‘Strengthening policy coherence to maximise the benefits of investing in sport.’

Sports ministers would be expected to address the contribution sports can make to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with an emphasis on strengthening the value and integrity of sport through policy coherence.

The meeting will also discuss ways to leverage sport investment as a contributor to the SDGs and human rights, as well as enhancing Commonwealth cooperation on a cohesive sport policy agenda.

Meanwhile, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) will welcome more than 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 Commonwealth nations and territories to the Gold Coast and event cities Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville, to share in the celebration of sport, entertainment and culture.

The largest sporting event to be staged in Australia this decade, GC2018 will feature the largest integrated sports program in Commonwealth Games history, comprising 18 sports and seven para-sports.

Beach Volleyball, Para Triathlon and Women’s Rugby Sevens will make their Commonwealth Games debuts and for the first time at a Commonwealth Games, an equal number of men’s and women’s medal events will be contested.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) was established in January 2012. Working with Government and our Games Delivery Partners, GOLDOC’s role is to plan, organise and deliver a great Games in 2018.
