Sports Is My Life – GOC Secretary General Richard Akpokavie

Secretary General of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Lawyer Richard Akpokavie has disclosed that sports is his life and does not regret being a sportsman.

After receiving his second award from the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), the former president of the Ghana Hockey Association said sports has made him what he is today, and never regrets playing hockey at school, club and country, then becoming a coach as well as administrator as well as having the opportunity to serve as an arbitrator on the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS), the governing body of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

According to Akpokavie, he received his first SWAG award at age 16 as Best Hockey Player (1981) in 1982, and he was presented with a hockey stick by the late Madam Theodocia Okoh which he still keeps.

Receiving his second award which is a meritorious one, he thanked the media body for their monitoring and research in coming out to honour outstanding sports personalities at the national level.

“I am very happy, but I will love SWAG to go deep and monitor those doing well at the grassroots level in sports and reward them too” he stressed.

Richard Akpokavie was one of the distinguished sports personalities who were honoured at the 45th SWAG awards.

The event comes up on Saturday October 10, 2020 at the Alisa Swiss Spirit Hotel in Accra.

Due to Covid-19, the 2019/2020 SWAG awards ceremony would be different from previous years with limited guests and very short, but live on television and social media platforms.
