All African Games qualifiers: Queens win, Meteors lose

Black QueensThere is still all to play for after Ghana’s teams suffered contrasting fortunes in the 2015 All African Games qualifiers over the weekend.

While the national female team, the Black Queens narrowly beat Zimbabwe 2:1 at the Accra Sports stadium, the male national Under 23 team, the Black Meteors slipped to a 0:1 loss to Mozambique in Maputo.

The Meteors held their own against their host for long periods in the game but conceded an own goal with less than 10 minutes to end the game in Maputo. They will be looking forward to bounce back in the return leg encounter in two weeks’ time.

In Accra, Agnes Aduako converted from the spot after captain Mercy Myles was fouled in the penalty box in the 30th minute while substitute Samira Suleman put the home side in from control in the 56th minute.

But Emmaculate Mbispa scored a consolation goal for the Brave Warriors of Zimbabwe late on in the game.

The win gives the Queens an advantage into the April 4 second leg of this first round AAG qualifier in Harare.
