Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, president of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has advised sportsmen and women to obey the instructions of His Excellency Nana Akuffo Addo, president of Ghana, and other health experts to stay at home.

According to Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah who doubles as the president of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) the life of every Ghanaian is important, so no one should take the unnecessary risk and go out to get infected by the coronavirus and spread it out.

He noted that the world is facing a hard time, and the pandemic has brought everything to a standstill, causing the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games to be postponed till next year.

He expressed that though it is unfortunate that the Games has to be shifted, it was done because of the safety and health of athletes, officials and the fans.

He said the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the Tokyo 2020 Games had to consider the lives of people and with the advise of the World Health Organisation (WHO) move the sports festival to a different date.

According to the GOC president, he is in touch with the IOC and ANOCA presidents, and they are working round the clock to find solutions and save the Olympic Games.

He urged all Ghanaian sportsmen and women to stay at home for mandatory 14 days, obey and practise all the health directives and protocols, and also try as much as possible to train at home.

“Sportsmen can invent many physical exercises to be in shape like press-ups, jack jumps, skipping, weightlifting and others. I hope and pray that it shall be well with us” he said.

He advised sports people to use the quarantine period profitably by doing some house chores and reading the Bible or Koran.

He added that this is a time to show love as Ghanaians and called on rich people to support the less priviledged.

He also tasked sports federation heads to contact their athletes as frequently as possible and offer some motivation and encouragement.

“By protecting ourselves, we protect others, let’s us all help to break the infection chain by staying at home, these are very trying times” he added.
